“C’était le problème de l’homme qui m’occupait et, pour savoir ce qu’est l’homme, il fallait évidemment connaître la pensée sur l’homme et il fallait connaître la philosophie à partir de la philosophie grecque. Or, pour accéder à la philosophie grecque – et ceci était ma ferme conviction -, il ne sufsait pas de lire les oeuvres des philosophes, il fallait vraiment connaître la langue des philosophes, la langue grecque. Il était aussi nécessaire d’étudier la poésie grecque. À l’école, le cours des études était flexible, on pouvait aller d’un domaine à l’autre et c’est ce que j’ai fait.”

As a student Klibansky frequented the Weber family home in Heidelberg, where Marianne Weber, then widowed, hosted regular salons. Klibansky recounts helping with the proofs for an edition of Max Weber’s Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, a copy of which, with Marianne Weber’s inscription, remains in the Raymond Klibansky Collection preserved at McGill University.
